Next year’s veggies

We are well into the new season’s veggie gardening here at the croft. Brendhan has spent most of the week extending the veggie garden. It is now double the size of the garden we dug when we first moved here at the beginning of winter. We really need the space too – we currently have around 350 veggie seedlings ready to plant out and another 3 to 400 still growing. Yes that isn’t a typo we have nearly 800 veggie seedlings!

500 Vege seedlings

The first batch of seedlings being hardened off for planting.

Why so many? Well, to start with we are sowing all of our veggie seeds in little pots (modules) made from old newspaper (mostly by Sarah as I managed to have something else to do…). Even the seeds that are traditionally sowed direct such as carrots, beans, peas etc are sowed into these modules. Also, we had intended to have a stall at the annual Camerons community market day, selling seedlings to all comers. Unfortunately we heard about the market day just a bit too late to get our seedlings large enough for sale and so now have a huge oversupply for our own needs! A few were large enough to sell on the day so we donated these to the community stall helping raise funds for the local community club.

Watch this space – there will be some exciting photos of our extensive vege beds (as soon as they are finished).
