Lettuce recommend

We have been getting lots of lovely salads from our veggie garden lately and as we don’t have much news of interest (just fencing, fencing and more fencing) we thought that we’d take the opportunity to recommend Freckles to you.

Described by Kings Seeds as -
“An Austrian Heirloom whose name Forellenschuss means speckled like a trout’s back. A green looseleaf Romaine that is splashed with maroon freckles and has a sweet tender flavour. Ideal for baby leaf and also attractive as an ornamental.”
We have found them to be slightly harder to germinate than other lettuces, perhaps a bit more temperature sensitive or less tolerant of drying out. Once they grow however they just keep on going – this plant was germinated in a paper pot when we were still living in Blackball. It got transplanted into soil in our veggie garden here at the Croft and has been feeding us now for six months. Every 2 or 3 weeks we harvest all the leaves larger than a couple of centimeters.

They have a mild crispness that is the perfect base for a mixed salad. Lately we’ve been adding homegrown carrots, spring onions, beetroot, tokinashi radishes and a red wine vinaigrette. Bon appetite…
